John Brosnan (or Coach Brosnan, as he was known throughout Castro Valley) died peacefully at home in San Lorenzo on September 30, 2020 after a short illness. His 3 daughters and his favorite caregiver, Ngozi Eze were by his side.
He graduated with a MA in Physical Education and started teaching PE at Castro Valley High School in 1963 and then practically lived there. He retired in 1994. He coached varsity football for his entire teaching career; it was his favorite thing. His grandfather told him “you can’t make a living playing football” and that was all the motivation a stubborn kid needed!
He served as the Athletic Director for much of his career and also coached varsity baseball and golf for several years.
He was predeceased in June 2019 by his loving wife of 62 years, Maureen, who attended every CVHS football and baseball game he coached. She was his biggest fan! He was also predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Emma and Jorge Orozco, and sisters- and brothers-in law Claire Noonan, James Smith and Dan Lydon. He leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law Patrick (who attended every game) and Patricia Brosnan. And sisters- and brothers-in-law Rosemarie and John Smith, James Noonan and Patricia Lydon and his lifelong best friend, Tom Davis.
He also leaves his 3 wonderful daughters (who also attended almost every game) and their spouses: Susan & Tom Gannon, Maureen (Mo) Brosnan and Kathleen & Richard Wood. He was a funny and loving “Papa” to 5 grandchildren James, Carrie (Manny), Kelsey, Michaela and Erica, and 3 great grandchildren, Hailey, John and Isabelle. He also leaves behind many fantastic cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as many great friends. And, of course, all his former players, many of whom became friends for life.
Every time I write something it reminds me of other things he did. I’m sure there’s more. I know there’s more, especially about how hard he worked to coach a bunch of boys into men of good character, year after year after year. Guys all over CV and beyond can tell you about that.
